"They Named Me Marjorie" - The Brave Journey of an Orphan Train Rider
Author Presentation and Book Signing Wednesday, September 23, 2009
From 1854 to 1929, an estimated 250,000 children rode trains from New York and other over populated
areas of the United States, to homes mostly in farming communities in the Midwest, to find a new home. Some of these children
were orphans; others were abandoned, while others were put on trains by their parents hoping they would have a better life.
The trains were called "orphan trains".
Join us on Wednesday, September 23rd at 6:30 p.m. for a presentation by Ann Zemke, author of "They Named Me Marjorie".
Ann's grandmother, Marjorie Peterson, an orphan train rider, survived a lifetime of seemingly insurmountable challenges,
including being indentured by the family who took her off the oprhan train in November 1906. Marjorie's indomitable spirit
allowed her to make significant personal contributions to the world that tested her so hard as a child and as an adult.
Ann tell's Marjorie's heartwarming story through this narrative and the very special quilt she made in her grandmothe's memory.
After her program, Ann will sign books and answer questions. The fee for this event is $10.00; if you purchase the book at the
time you sign-up the fee is $9.00.
Stop in and pick up your copy of the book today for $15.00. Books will also be available the night of the presentation.

If you missed Evelyn's Old Fashion Bed Turning . . .
Our "Old Fashion Bed Turning" with Evelyn Nall was held on Saturday, April 4th. The bed turning
was attended by more than sixty women who enjoyed viewing and hearing the stories about each of Evelyn's beautiful quilt projects. Evelyn's
quilts were truly "works of beauty" and inspired each one of us to get out our machines and work on a quilt!
For those who were unable to join us, or if you just want to see Evelyn's quilts again, please click here to view
a slideshow of the event. We'd love to have another bed turning sometime in the future, so keep watching the website for more information.
